Ferguson Foundation History
The Ferguson Foundation honors James Monroe Ferguson and Callie Farris Ferguson of Willis, Texas (formerly known as Byspot, Texas). James Monroe Ferguson, affectionately known as "Grandpa Monroe," was a well-respected pillar of the community, recognized for his leadership and unwavering support of both youth and adults. In the early 1900s, he founded and built New Salem Church alongside his immediate relatives. A man of strong values, he found joy in life, hunting, and spending time with his family.
James and his brother-in-law, Jackson Farris, played a crucial role in securing job opportunities for local workers involved in the shipment of timber, cotton, and livestock in San Jacinto County, Texas. His efforts helped shape workforce connections within the Conroe railroad system, leaving a lasting impact on the region. Together, James and Callie nurtured a close-knit and supportive community in Byspot until his health declined.
Callie Farris Ferguson, a proud member of the Alabama-Coushatta Tribe, was the daughter of the late Reverend William Farris, pastor of New Salem Church. Known for her kindness and resilience, Callie is remembered as a gracious and generous woman who touched the lives of many. Rooted in her Native American traditions, she cherished walking barefoot and actively participated in cultural ceremonies. Though small in stature, she possessed a mighty spirit, shaped by her rich heritage and strong upbringing.
Callie was devoted to her family and community, often preparing Sunday meals for ministers after church services. She served as a role model for young women, embodying strength and compassion. After James' passing, Callie faced the difficult reality of sustaining herself. To ensure her safety and well-being, she ultimately had to sell portions of the land she inherited from her father.
James and Callie instilled in their children the values of love, respect, service, and education—principles that have been passed down through generations, including to my late grandmother, Geneva Ferguson, and my mother, Bernice Nero Moss. Our family remains committed to preserving the Ferguson legacy through our foundation’s work, ensuring that their spirit of servant leadership continues to uplift our community. Through our collective efforts, we will honor and promote our rich family heritage for generations to come.
